Taking this bit first, War is Bliss is currently recruiting PvPers with or without experiance and we're happy to take on new members to help you get started and pew pew with us some, we do a lot of high-sec/low-sec PVP so money really isn't an issue, drop me a mail in-game if you're interested, we don't have any requirements and are pretty laid-back, so drop a mail!
Anyways, back to business, solo PVP can be a tricky-business, i've tried it a bit in my Brutix and found that I either caught a solo-target off-guard, jumped into a few cruisers and taken one or two down whilst I go down in a fit of blazing glory (using a gank-fit so my ship can't tank worth a damn) or I run into a group bigger and better than me and I get wiped off the map. Solo PVP is a definately a risky-business, as popularity in PVP generally tends to be in groups, varying from a 3-man gang up to 20/30 man size gangs.
It can be done, but I can't fly a Drake or any Caldari ship so I can't really comment on them. Although HAM Drakes are meant to be pretty nice from what i've heard.
You mentioned WAR and DAOC, you can also do this style tactic in EVE (taking them down with you) but it is pretty tricky, for example: if they have ECM in the gang like you mentioned, you're going to get jammed and ****d, and ECCM isn't always so effective as it says on the tin.
Onto Faction Ammo and Overheating, I generally use Faction quite a lot as it does give the bang for its buck in comparison with T2 ammo (which has so many downsides it's cruel) but it isn't mandatory, i've flown with just regular T1 ammo and taken ships down, it is just a little bit slower. Overheating? I don't use it personally, but it does help a lot in PVP, especially if you need to turn the tide in your favour.
With getting caught at a gate, generally you need to check the situation first and see if you can take it or not, if not, burn back to the gate and try to jump back through and flee, if so, i'd say risk it, only way you'll know is by trying, but it is disheartening to get caught and quickly mobbed.
But keep at it, you definately have the right attitude.
Edit: Also, generally don't try to take in too many aspects in one ship all in one go, otherwise you just end up with a bit of a sucky platform trying to do too many things at once. An example would be between 'Tanking' ships and 'Gank' ships, the latter tends to focus on its survivability, whilst the latter heads for raw damage and utility. (Utility in the fact that MWDs/ABs, Warp Scramblers etc are midslots, where as Caldari shield tanking mods are also mid-slots, not so much sacrificing damage because those are low-slots, which the Drake has plenty of and doesn't have to use for it's health). I find that gank-setups work pretty well in solo-Pvp (take them out before they take you out) and i'd reccomend trying one out and see how that works. But really you want to get a set-up you're comfortable with, you'll never be able to stop everything that may come at you, but you can make it painful for the others to try. |
